NYC Pothole Tracker is a free, non-commercial project that maps New York City's public 311 pothole complaints and lets people post photos to show whether a pothole is still there. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and who can see it.
If you just browse the map
You don't need an account to use the map, trends or search. The site has no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. To show the map, your browser loads data directly from the services listed under Services we use, and those services receive normal technical information such as your IP address, like any website you visit.
If you create an account
- Email and password: we store your email address. Your password is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form by our login provider, Supabase. We can't see it.
- Sign in with Google: Google shares your email address, name and profile picture with the site. We only use your email to identify your account, and we never display your name or picture.
- Your email is never shown publicly, sold, or used for marketing. We only email you when you ask, for example a password reset link.
If you send a photo or report a pothole
- We store the photo, what you said you saw (still there, fixed, or no pothole), your optional note, the pothole's location on the map, and the date. It's linked to your account so it can be reviewed and so you can track it under My photos.
- Before uploading, your browser shrinks the photo and removes its hidden metadata, including the GPS location of your phone.
- Every submission is reviewed before it goes live. Once approved, the photo, status, note and date are public on the map. Your email and account details are not.
- Please don't include people's faces, license plates or other personal details in photos or notes. Submissions that do can be rejected.
Services we use
- Supabase: accounts, the database of submissions, and photo storage.
- Google: "Continue with Google" sign-in, only if you choose it.
- GitHub Pages: hosts the website itself.
- NYC Open Data and NYC GeoSearch: the 311 complaint data and address search.
- OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap: the map background.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your account and submissions are kept until you ask us to delete them. To delete your account or any of your submissions, including approved ones, contact us using the link below and we'll remove them.
Children
The site isn't directed at children under 13, and they shouldn't create accounts.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Questions or deletion requests: contact us on GitHub.
